On Friday, October 19th, New Haven's Firehouse 12 will present a two-set performance by New York accordionist/composer Will Holshouser and his longstanding trio, featuring trumpeter Ron Horton and bassist David Phillips. Led by “the squeezebox king of downtown" (Time Out New York), this nearly decade-old group has showcased its unusual instrumentation around the world and recorded two CDs, including its latest, Singing to a Bee (Clean Feed), recorded live in Portugal.

“Holshouser knows how to eschew categories, refurbish old-world sounds, and grab the ear with airy, attractive melodies," wrote All Music Guide reviewer David R. Adler. Critics have noted his trio's “refreshing sound" (Bob Karlovits, Pittsburgh Tribune- Review) and “dynamic interplay" (Jay Collins, Signal to Noise), calling the music “playful, frequently surprising and seldom predictable" (Jay Miller, Patriot Ledger). The New York Times' Anthony Tommasini adds, “[Holshouser's] compositions are intriguing, with wayward harmonies and soft-spoken melodies that make the accordion's thin, reedy treble range sound sweet. This could be music for some fantastical Fellini film."

One of the few accordionists working in creative improvised music today, Holshouser has assembled a distinctive sound from his diverse musical experiences. A former student of Anthony Braxton and accordion legend Dr. William Schimmel, he has worked in a broad range of contexts with Antony and the Johnsons, Dave Douglas, the Mark Morris Dance Group, the New York City Opera, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Raymond Scott Orchestrette and Andy Statman among many others. In addition to his trio, Holshouser currently works with Matt Munisteri's Brock Mumford and David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness. He is also a composer of solo accordion music and scores for short films.
