Critics have called The Claudia Quintet a very fresh jazz band with unusual instrumentation played by some major talents" (Philip McNally, Cadence) and a postmodern chamber ensemble negotiating new ways of integrating composition and improvisation" (Mark Stryker, Detroit Free Press). AllAboutJazz.com Senior Editor John Kelman adds, The Claudia Quintet is, quite simply, a category all its own -- a group of players with the kind of infinite reach to give Hollenbeck's captivating compositions an approach like no other."
Hollenbeck stands as just one of a few accomplished drummers with a high aptitude for composition," wrote Dan Ouellette in a March 2007 DownBeat feature story. Although he is best known for leading The Claudia Quintet, Hollenbeck's diverse work as a leader also includes recordings with larger ensembles, such as his Grammy nominated 2005 CD, A Blessing (Omnitone). He has also been commissioned to compose music for ensembles ranging from choirs to percussion groups to the renowned new music outfit, Bang on A Can All-Stars. As a performer, he has recorded with Bob Brookmeyer, Scott Fields, Satoko Fujii, Meredith Monk and Cuong Vu among many others. He is currently a member of such regularly working bands as Tony Malaby's Tuba Trio, the John Hollenbeck/Jorrit Dijkstra Duo and the Refuge Trio.
