Hospice of Philadelphia and Jazz Bridge are joining forces on September 30th when the incomparable jazz pianist Trudy Pitts will play at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1333 Old Welsh Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA, at 3PM to benefit jazz musicians in crisis and hospice patients from our area. Tickets are $12.50. Please call 215-581-2360 or 215-517-8337 for info. Hospice of Philadelphia is a division of the Visiting Nurses Association of Philadelphia.

Trudy Pitts is an international jazz star on the piano and the Hammond organ, and has played with greats such as Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, and Sonny Stitt. She recorded four albums for Prestige, appearing with Willis Jackson, Pat Martino, and later Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

The New York Times commented on her recent appearance with saxophonist Greg Osby: “Ms. Pitts began the set on piano and, with Mr. Osby alone, played Body and Soul...she presented ideas one after the other, sequentially and charismatically, swelling and quieting. Mr. Osby picked around the famous melody subversively, running parallel to Ms. Pitts, taking wide harmonic routes around the horn without going dissonant...Ms. Pitts wrung them out, going from a muted tinkle to a rippling, volcanic roar." Jazz Times has called her “The Godmother of Jazz Organ" and recently Ms. Pitts had the distinction of being the first jazz musician to perform on the spectacular new organ in Verizon Hall, at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, in a concert opposite the great singer Nancy Wilson.
