Lewis Porter September Gigs with Ravi Coltrane and More at Big Apple Jazz

The noted pianist, author and educator Lewis Porter has curated an exciting range of jazz groups for September that will bring new musicians and new audiences to Big Apple Jazz / EZ's Woodshed. The goal is to make this Harlem retreat a “destination" for jazz fans throughout the city.

Big Apple Jazz has a delightful coffee-house atmosphere with burgers, fish, soft drinks and desserts available, as well as jazz CDs and books and other gifts--you can bring your own wine ($3 corking fee per bottle). It is located between W.131 and W.132 Streets at 2236 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. (aka 7th Ave);B, C and 2, 3 Trains to 135th or the M2 bus stops right in front.Tel. (212) 283-JAZZ (5299). If you're driving, parking is easy on 131st.

EZ's Woodshed features live jazz all day long starting at 2PM with two to three bands performing seven days a week! “Main event" performances are Thurs-Sun, 8:30-11pm. As you walk into the cafe from historic 7th Ave. you are greeted by a jazz-lover's collection of art and memorabilia - including the city's best selection of hard-to-find independent CD's. The backroom performance space is adorned with customized woodwork, and butcher block tables and tractor seats that give it a welcoming earthy feel.

There are four special benefit events we would like to highlight--all of these events run from 8:30 to 11pm,:

Sat. 9/8--BENEFIT CONCERT #1. Loren Schoenberg, noted saxophonist and Executive Director of the planned National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Thurs. 9/20-- BENEFIT CONCERT #2. Wycliffe Gordon in a unique solo trombone recital.

Thurs. 9/27-- BENEFIT CONCERT #3. Ethan Iverson, the fabulously inventive pianist ofThe Bad Plus, presents a rare solo recital.

Sat. 9/29-- BENEFIT CONCERT #4. RAVI COLTRANE with Lewis Porter (synth), Brad Jones (bass), and Rudy Royston (drums).

In addition to performing with Ravi Coltrane on 9/29. Porter will also be performing on synthesizer on these four dates, 8:30-11pm

Sat., 9/1. A cooperative “free improv" trio with Porter, bassist Adam Lane, and drummer Lou Grassi. Three innovative artists in an evening of electronic sounds, from wild to dreamy and hypnotic.

Fri., 9/7. Porter's swinging trio with Rudy Royston on drums and bassist TBA. This is a CD RELEASE PARTY for Porter's CD Italian Encounter (live in Italy, on the Altrisuoni label) which will be for sale at $15.

Thurs., 9/13. A cooperative “free improv" quartet with the legendary Daniel Carter (sax, clarinet, trumpet), Porter, bassist Adam Lane, and drummer Whit Dickey. Carter is a free jazz legend, an original stylist in the tradition of Ornette Coleman. Adam Lane has played with John Tchicai and many others.Dickey has worked with Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris and others.

Sat., 9/15. The exciting Salim Washington on saxophone, with Porter, Hakim Jami (bass), and Malik Washington (drums). Washington, a music professor at Brooklyn College, is also a charging post-Coltrane performer and composer.

September's evening calendar of 8:30pm performances is filled out with the talents of Marion Cowings, Salim Washington, Kenny Wessel, Daniel Carter, Captain Coconut, Lou Grassi, Adam Lane, Mike Baggetta, Ethan Mann, Yael Acher, Hakim Jami, and Malik Washington.
