With Jeff Bradshaw, Urban Guerilla Orchestra, and more!

Philadelphia's own J. Michael Harrison debuts a brand-new series at the Painted Bride. His Bridge@TEN celebrates the innovative jazz and rare grooves show he created in 1996 at WRTI 90.1FM to make up for a lack of choices on his dial. “The Bridge has been a vehicle to share my passion for music up close and personal," says Harrison.

To help him celebrate, Harrison as host will be joined by Hidden Beach recording artist and supernova trombonist Jeff Bradshaw--in his first appearance at the Bride--with his Brass Heaven and Friends project as well as the much beloved Urban Guerilla Orchestra (UGO).

“I thought it would be hip to take a second to breathe and mark this accomplishment," says Harrison. “Music is truly my sanctuary, it is a kind of therapy or as Hannibal said to me, '...its medicine.' Music is a passion, a reason to live, and a bright moment."

The Bridge @ 10 is scheduled for Friday April 6 at 8PM. Tickets are $25. The Painted Bride Art Center is located at 230 Vine Street in Old City, Philadelphia.

For tickets and info, call the Painted Bride box office at (215) 925-9914 or visit paintedbride.org. Members receive a 50% discount on single tickets; students and seniors with ID receive a 25% discount on single tickets.

The featured bands for the 10th Anniversary concert will perform music evoking of the eclectic mix of music presents on the Bridge over the past decade. The Bridge@TEN will provide an opportunity for the participating artists to, “reveal, explore, embrace and share the music that inspires them,"

“...I can recall Michele Rosewoman mentioning to me how she liked to chill and listen to the 'Quiet Storm,' Jean Paul Bourelly telling me how he would have really liked to have gone further out with his Hendrix tribute record, Jamaaladeen Tacuma's response to a Sonny Sharrock track that I played while he was visiting the station," says Harrison.

The Bridge has afforded Harrison the opportunity to work with some of his favorite artists. “There is an incredible talent base that this Northeastern quadrant offers," he says.

In UGO and Jeff Bradshaw's bands, Harrison has hired the best. UGO ranks far ahead of the pack" and Jeff's Brass Heaven project “is notorious for providing some of the Funkiest covers" a New Orleans type brass band can bring forth.

About J. Michael Harrison

Born in North Philadelphia, J. Michael Harrison attended Simon Gratz High School and the Community College of Philadelphia, and became fascinated with the live music his brother and cousin exposed him to--bands as varied as Mandrill, Sly, Funkadelic, Miles Davis, Herbie, James Brown, Thelonious Monk, Santana, John Coltrane, and the Temptations as well as Iron Butterfly, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and Frank Zappa, formed his early aesthetic consciousness. Harrison's venture info radio came about because of frustration with the lack of “...progressive, diverse and adventurous music," he says. His first show was titled “Is That Jazz", which debuted on WPEB in 1993 and ran for over three years. He connected with WRTI late in 1994 worked as a volunteer and later he worked remote broadcast and occasionally filled in for other hosts. “The Bridge" became a full-fledged program in 1996 after a few specialty broadcasts. Harrison produced Jamaaladeen Tacuma's Brotherzone CD and received the award for “Best Radio Program" from Philadelphia Magazine in 2002.

About Jeff Bradshaw

Jeff Bradshaw was raised on a dusty-floored church in North Philly, where brass bands are the main attraction. The first instrument he played was the snare drum, and later the baritone horn and sousaphone. In high school, he was asked to choose a “favorite" instrument and he chose the trombone--because no one else touched it--he knew then it was his job to make the “nerdy" instrument cool. Forgoing college for music, he started gigging with Philly's musical 'young Turks'--James Poyser, Andre Harris & Vidal Davis, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson, King Britt, and Carvin Higgins & Ivan Barrius. He eventually performed and/or recorded with Musiq, Floetry, Earth Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson. By chance, he took over one night for his friend and trumpet impresario Jafar Baron, and his career as a band leader was born. Bradshaw joined Jill Scott's debut recording and touring bands and recorded his own album for the Hidden Beach label, “Bone Deep". He now leads two bands--Brass Heaven and Bone Deep--and has residencies in Philadelphia at Zanzibar Blue and World Caf Live in addition to an active international touring schedule.

In the summer of 2005, internationally acclaimed trombonist, producer, and Hidden Beach recording artist Jeff Bradshaw decided to pull together all of his brass playing friends from church and abroad to unite in a one of a kind musical marriage. Bradshaw says, “We blend hip-hop, soul, jazz, and spirituals in a way never done before." Brass Heaven has already created an underground following, while opening shows for legendary hip-hop artists The Roots on stages as big as the House of Blues and Radio City Music Hall.
