A member of the Portland jazz scene since the mid seventies, Dave Leslie has played with jazz greats Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson, Jim Pepper and Charlie Rouse. He has also led the Famous Daves, the Dave Leslie Quintet and played in Freezer Burn, The Tone Sharks, Oomph, and the Mike Curtis Klezmer Quartet, among others. He has toured in Europe and North America. He obtained a B.A. in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington in the early seventies and went on to study the Turkish tanbur with Necdet Yaser in Istanbul.

The Brim (Louie 024) is Leslie's first CD as a leader on Louie Records (he played on Street Song, Waxing the Slide and Report from A Log), but he produced two albums - Path and Confluence on the Orb label, and has appeared on several other nationally released albums.

Dave Leslie and Dave Storrs are no strangers to collaboration. Storrs played with Leslie in the Famous Daves, Oomph, Mike Curtis Klezmer Quartet and they led Freezer Burn. Leslie played on Storrs earlier albums Ross Island and Jumper Cables and in 1985 they co -wrote “Destination", which premiered at the first Pacific First Federal Composers Festival.

Mike Curtis (reeds) has also been involved with Leslie over the past two decades, playing on Path and Confluence and in any number of groups. Tom Bergeron (reeds), Page Hundemer (bass), Steve Willis (guitar) and Keller Coker (trombone) are no strangers to the Louie catalog, appearing on over a dozen of the titles.

In a garage/studio far away from big city traffic, Louie Record is crafting sounds from years of playing, listening and just plain living. This experienced group of “sandbox participants" is using its youthful enthusiasm and freedom to create new sounds. All Louie Records titles have received very positive and encouraging responses from interested listeners everywhere.
