Subtle yet constantly creative, lyrical yet never shy to stretch herself, Andrea Wolper is a true jazz singer"--Scott Yanow
Blending June Christy with Julie London seems the vocal equivalent of adding shaved ice to cocoa. Yet Andrea Wolper, an increasingly popular presence on the New York City club circuit, makes the mixture delightfully palatable"--Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
Andrea Wolper Quartet, with Ron Affif (guitar), Ken Filiano (bass), and Michael T.A. Thompson (drums), appears Friday, Sept. 15 at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, 60th and Broadway, 5th floor, New York. The group will play the 11 PM After Hours set in the Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival, following Marian McPartland. Please note earlier- than-usual Friday evening set time (11 PM).
olper's recent release The Small Hours (VarisOne.Jazz), built around her longstanding trio with Affif and Filiano, has earned the vocalist and songwriter critical acclaim. The Dizzy's date will feature songs from that release, other favorites from Wolper's repertoire, and new additions. Wolper, Affif, and Filiano recently toured Germany and the Czech Republic, and are looking forward to returning in Spring 2007.
In her highly original," very individual" style, this brave, unpredictable and soulful" singer wraps standard, non-standard, and original songs in her simultaneously warm and adventurous embrace. Respecting the past while welcoming the future, Wolper moves seamlessly between the intimate and the energetic, inviting audiences to join her on a most entertaining musical ride.
Wolper's credits include Jazz at the Cape (South Africa), JVC New York Jazz Festival, Donne in Musica Festival (Italy), Hot Clube (Portugal), Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, Fairfax (CA) Jazz Festival, First Night New York, Club Reduta (Prague), Oxident (Berlin), Many Colors of a Woman Jazz Concerts, and numerous appearances in New York (including Sweet Rhythm, Makor, Cornelia Street Cafe and 55 Bar) and across the country.
