Columbus, OH – In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) returns to the historic Southern Theatre on April 10-13 for a special fanfare to the trumpet titled “Trumpet Summit,” featuring guest artist Sean Jones.
The bright vivacious sound of the trumpet has long been featured in the art of jazz. From Louis Armstrong to Dizzy Gillespie to Herb Alpert, our very own trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling will lead the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in an assortment of works embellishing this classic instrument. Joining the stage will be Cleveland Jazz Orchestra artistic director and trumpeter/composer/educator Sean Jones with his own interpretation of the legacy of Miles Davis.
Sean Jones is a Warren, Ohio native who heard, sang, and played music in church from an early age. He started playing trumpet in the fifth grade, was turned on to jazz through Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and performed both gospel and classical music while in high school. Versed in numerous musical idioms, Sean received his bachelor of music degree from Youngtown State University and his master’s degree from Rutgers University. He spent most of the last decade as lead trumpeter of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in New York, returning to his northeast Ohio home in 2009 to succeed former teacher Jack Schantz as head of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Sean is a professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he also is artistic director of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. He is also Assistant Professor of Jazz Trumpet at Oberlin College. He has worked with many jazz masters including Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Jon Faddis, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, and the Illinois Jacquet Big Band. He has released six recordings for the Detroit label Mack Avenue Records: Eternal Journey, Gemini, Roots, Kaleidoscope, The Search Within, and the latest, No Need for Words.
To commemorate Jazz Appreciation Month and National Autism Awareness Month, both celebrated annually during the month of April, the Jazz Arts Group will form a unique partnership with the Helping Hands Center for Special Needs (HHC). HHC will join the Columbus Jazz Orchestra during its “Trumpet Summit” concerts to share information about the work being done locally and statewide around issues of autism research and awareness.
Audience members can also join Byron Stripling for a casual and engaging conversation with Sean Jones on Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 pm in a new workshop series at the Jazz Academy. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” provides participants a behind-the-scenes glimpse from the artist perspective on performing with the CJO – adding new perspective to being an audience member. In addition to the opportunity to learn something new, each guest artist will be asked to share what they are currently listening to on their iPods or CD players, introducing audiences to new and exciting music and artists. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” is free to CJO subscribers and $10 for general registrants. Under the direction of Mark Donavan, the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra (CYJO) is proud to perform prior to each Swingin’ with the CJO matinee concert. Comprised of premier players in grades 9-12 from central Ohio and beyond, the CYJO provides opportunities for talented high school age musicians to further their experience in America’s classical music – jazz. Admission to the CYJO performance at 2:00 pm is included with each 3:00 pm Sunday matinee ticket purchase.
