The US Postal Service introduced a Jimi Hendrix Forever stamp at SXSW last week which will be followed later this year by a Janis Joplin stamp. They're both part of the USPS's Music Icons series which launched last year. At SXSW the new stamp was dedicated at the Jimi Hendrix Celebration concert featuring such guitarists as Robby Krieger of The Doors and Slash, shown playing together at right (click for full image).

The Jimi Hendrix Forever stamp, available for a limited time at post offices and on Ebay, was dedicated at the Jimi Hendrix Celebration on March 13. Slated to perform were:

“guitar luminaries Wayne Kramer (MC5), Slash (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), Rusty Anderson (Paul McCartney), Dave & Phil Alvin, Robby Krieger (The Doors), and Perry & Etty Farrell! The tribute will also feature Doug Pinnick (King's X), Mary Bridget Davies, and Jesse Malin. Los Lonely Boys and Vintage Trouble are the opening acts."

Part of the Music Icons series, which kicked off last year with stamps honoring Johnny Cash, Lydia Mendoza and Ray Charles, the Jimi Hendrix stamp will be followed by one for Janis Joplin.

The process of picking out who goes on these stamps can take years. Jimi's sister Janie said she was involved for about a year while the USPS director of stamp services, Susan McGowan, says the project stretched over 3 years.

Future music-related stamps, not necessarily for the Icons series, include a possible John Lennon stamp as well as a second Elvis Presley stamp. While this year's theme is rock-focused, future Music Icons are likely from other genres such as jazz.
