Kathryn King Media has announced a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of Charting Jazz: The Mastery of Bill Holman, a documentary about the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. The film will shine a light on the extraordinary Mr. Holman, a tenor saxophonist, bandleader, arranger and composer long deeply respected and revered by his fellow musicians but not as well known to the general public as other accomplished musical innovators of his generation. The campaign was launched on 6 March 2014 and will end at midnight on Friday, 4 April 2014.

The campaign can be found here.

There is a Facebook page devoted to Charting Jazz here.

The film will feature performances by the Bill Holman Band, interviews with writers, arrangers, composers, producers, educators, students and band members, plus extended interviews with Bill Holman himself conducted by eminent jazz journalist Doug Ramsey. Among the interview subjects are Maria Schneider, Terry Gibbs, Bones Howe, Gerald Wilson, John Clayton, Don Heckman, Marc Myers, Ron Stout, Bill Dobbins and many others.

Charting Jazz is directed by Gil Gilbert, a filmmaker long associated with profiles of artists and musicians, whose feature Misfire: The Rise and Fall of the Shooting Gallery was released in late 2013 and invited to show in multiple film festivals. The producer is Kathryn King, publicist, producer of audio and video recordings, and stepdaughter of Bill Holman. “For years it has been my dream to do a film which would do justice to the essential role Bill Holman has played in jazz," says Ms. King, “and now there is finally an opportunity to realize this dream. It all depends on the Kickstarter campaign!"
