Whirlwind Recordings announces its bumper-crop of upcoming releases for 2014, featuring an eclectic mix of standout albums from known and up-and-coming artists based in NYC, London and beyond. Here's a snapshot:
March 11, 2104: Leave the Door Open by Joel Harrison & Anupam Shobhakar. A brand new collaboration featuring cutting edge western improvisation, roots music and Indian classical music. Also features Gary Versace, Hans Glawischnig, Dan Weiss, David Binney and more.
April 21, 2014: In the Chop House by London-based saxophonist Tori Freestone. Featuring her regular working trio which includes Dave Manington on bass and Tim Giles on drums. Tori is one of the UK's most respected young saxophonists and this is her highly anticipated debut album.
April 28, 2014: Southern Drawl by Monocled Man, the brainchild of Rory Simmons. Also features Chris Montague and Jon Scott. A trumpet, guitar and drum trio + electronics that's already being tipped as one of Europe's best new bands.
May 6, 2014: Authority Melts From Me by NYC-based pianist Bobby Avey. An incredible suite of music inspired by Vodou Drumming and the Haitian Revolution featuring Miguel Zenon, Ben Monder, Thomson Kneeland and Jordan Perlson.
May 20, 2014: Views from the Inside by trombonist, composer and conductor JC Sanford. An ambitious and stunning new release featuring his 15 piece orchestra—forget about genre barriers on this one. A star studded cast of NYC's finest as well.
June 2, 2014: Red Circle by Simon Purcell, current Head of Jazz at Trinity Conservatoire of Music in London. Features an all-star cast from the UK in Julian Siegel, Chris Batchelor, Steve Watts, Gene Calderazzo, and special guest Liane Carroll. The renowned educator comes back to his performance roots.
June 10 2014: First Meeting: Live in London, Vol. 1 by Lee Konitz, Dan Tepfer, Michael Janisch and Jeff Williams. The ever searching always inventive Konitz continues his prolific recording career with a truly standout live album from London. Exemplary playing by all on board and, excitedly, Konitz playing Soprano Sax on three of the eight tracks.
