Ireland-based Italian pianist Francesco Turrisi celebrates the UK launch of his album Grigio, his third release on the Diatribe label with a concert at London’s Vortex Jazz Club on Monday 10th February.

Turrisi’s highly melodic, deeply lyrical music draws from jazz, classical and folk traditions that reference various cultures and epochs. Alongside Turrisi’s striking originals, Grigio showcases the pianist’s haunting arrangements of traditional Irish songs, baroque and Hebrew songs that sound utterly relevant today and John Zorn’s “Hadasha”.

Described by the Irish Time’s Cormac Larkin as “the very model of a modern jazz musician” and “a unique and distinctive voice”, Turrisi is a long-time member of Christina Pluhar's much lauded early music ensemble l'Arpeggiata and plays in bands as diverse as the ebullient Balkan-flavored Yurodny, Zahr, which explores the reach and influence of Arabic music, and Tarab, a group which blends traditional Irish folk music with a cornucopia of Mediterranean flavors.

For the Vortex presentation of GrigioTurrisi’s Taquin Ensemble features vocalist Clara Sanabras, soprano saxophonist Nick Roth, cellist Kate Ellis, bassist Ruth Goller, drummer João Lobo and trumpeter Fulvio Sigurtà.

Turrisi’s previous recordings as leader, Si Dolce e il Tormento (Diatribe, 2009), Fotografia (Diatribe, 2011) and Songs of Experience (Taquin Records, 2013) have marked him out as one of the most original pianists/composers/arrangers inhabiting the middle ground between jazz, classical and folkloric influences.

His collaborations include the likes of singers Bobby McFerrin, Savina Yannatou, Christine Tobin, Maria Pia De Vito, saxophonists Dave Liebman and Gianluigi Trovesi, flamenco guitarist Pepe el Habichuela, kaval player Theodosii Spassov, violinist Luca Ciarla and many other outstanding musicians.
