14th Annual Newport Beach Jazz Party Set Feb. 12-16

Upcoming on Valentine’s Day weekend,eb.13-16, will be the 14th annual Newport Beach Jazz Party at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa in Orange county, California,featuring over 70 musicians playing “Right Down The Middle And Straight Ahead” Jazz.

Among the highlights this year is a Salute to Jazz at the Philharmonic which toured decades ago, a tribute to Stan Getz and a Valentines Day dance.

Here is a rundown of the other events:

Thursday’s opening night in the ballroom features the Byron Stripling Quartet, featuring Llew Matthews, Richard Simon and Butch Miles in a set dedicated to the great Louis Armstrong. This to be followed by a Salute to Benny Goodman by the Ken Peplowski-Chuck Redd Quintet. Closing will be the Byron Stripling Big Band with Butch Miles performing Gershwin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington compositions.

Friday Night begins at 7pm with the great drummer Jeff Hamilton and his trio. Next is vocalist Dena DeRose with a group featuring Nicki Parrott and Chuck Redd plus special guests Houston Person and Claudio Roditi.

Closing will be Ken Peplowski Quartet followed by the Salute to Jazz at the Philharmonic with Scott Hamilton, Harry Allen, Claudio Roditi, John Allred, Eric Reed, John Clayton, Butch Miles and Chuck Redd.

Saturday Night will begin with the All-Star group of Eric Reed, Mike Gurrola, Jeff Hamilton and Scott Hamilton followed by Harry Allen’s Salute to Stan Getz with Claudio Roditi, Bill Cantos, Chuck Berghofer Closing the evening will Hammond B3 organ player Joey DeFrancesco together with Jeff Hamilton and Houston Person.

Sunday, final night, will begin with an All-Star set featuring Ken Peplowski, John Allred, Harry Allen, Tom Ranier, Chuck Berghofer, Butch Miles and Chuck Redd. In addition bassist and vocalist Nicki Parrott will lead a duo set with Eric Reed followed by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with sets featuring two los Angeles-based vocalists, Barbara Morrison and rnie Andrews. This special evening brings together the LIVE performance of the L.A. Treasures Project and the release of its historic CD.

In addition to performances on the main stage, the weekend also offers sets pool side in the afternoons and mornings at brunches.
