Cuban-born American pianist/composer Fabian Almazan
is enjoying quite an auspicious debut project. Almazan’s Rhizome CD Project
is not only his debut fan-funded recording project for Blue Note/ArtistShare, but it is the first project that will be released under the new joint label. Almazan’s forthcoming Rhizome CD will be the end result of this groundbreaking project. Almazan’s compositions on the new album feature a jazz piano trio with the rare addition of vocals, guitar, and a string quartet. This recording project is being funded directly by Almazan’s fan base through ArtistShare. ArtistShare was the internet’s first fan-funding platform, predating and pioneering the current crowdfunding movement. Fans who participate in Almazan’s project will have access to his entire creative process behind the making of the recording as part of this mutually beneficial relationship. Almazan is documenting and sharing his artistic process exclusively through ArtistShare.
This project has two creative impulses behind it. Firstly, Almazan has a deep interest in music from both his native Cuba and his new home in the U.S. So, for this project Almazan is setting his original Spanish lyrics to music in an attempt to shine some light on the very rich, expressive poetry and music of the Latin-American culture that he grew up with. Secondly, this recording is inspired by an idea which is captured by the title: Rhizome. A Rhizome is essentially a giant plant system where all of the individual plants seen above ground are actually intricately connected underground. The music on the forthcoming album expresses how the Rhizome system is a metaphor for life. Almazan captures in music the sense that we are all unique individuals, yet we are all connected in a way that is not visible on the surface of reality - we are all Espejos
, or reflections of each other.About Blue Note/ArtistShare:
