The Jazz Bridge “Neighborhood Concert Jazz Series" at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts—439 Ashbourne Road in Cheltenham—presents bebop alto saxophone icon Tony Williams on Wednesday, October 2nd. There is one show at 7:30 p.m., tickets are $10/$5 for students, and are only available at the door. For info: 215-517-8337 or visit Jazz Bridge.

Tony Williams, who will be backed on this performance by pianist Dave Posmontier, bassist Mike Boone and drummer Craig McIver, virtually personifies the words “Philadelphia Jazz.” He’s been playing, and swinging—in a timeless, swing-to-bop style that defies categorization—since childhood, and in an astounding career that’s spanned almost six decades, he’s worked with giants like Wild Bill Davis, Lionel Hampton, Nat Adderley, Jimmy McGriff, Trudy Pitts and dozens of others.

As an educator, the jazz courses he offered in the Philadelphia public school system were ground-breakers, and many of his students have become jazz stars in their own right.

And the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival, starring the areas’ finest improvising talents, just celebrated its 24th year as one of Philadelphia’s most outstanding annual Jazz events.

Jazz Bridge, a 501C public charity that assists area Jazz and blues musicians in crisis, is sponsoring the “Neighborhood Concert Jazz Series" in Cheltenham, as well as 40 other events this season on five area stages in the Greater Delaware Valley.
