Enjoy an evening of music and artwork with the group FFEAR at the Rubin Museum of Art on Oct. 4. This concert includes two new world premiere compositions by co-leaders Ole Mathisen and Chris Washburne. The new compositions are interpretations of works of art that are part of the museum's collection. FFEAR is comprised of Ole Mathisen (saxophones), Chris Washburne (trombone, didgeridoo), Michael Bates (bass) and Tony Moreno (drums).

FFEAR - Forum for Electro-Acoustic Research, is an improvising quartet co-led by acclaimed soloists and frequent collaborators Ole Mathisen and Chris Washburne. “A quartet that seeks a space between jazz and chamber music," according to the New York Times, FFEAR's objective is to explore new sonic possibilities by adopting contemporary classical compositional techniques into an improvisational setting. Conventional uses of meter, tonality and harmony are replaced with multiple meters, microtonality, and open templates of form to create a fresh approach to improvised music. FFEAR has been performing to packed clubs and concert halls throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Rochester Jazz Festival, Molde Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Arhus Jazz Festival, Miller Theater at Columbia University, Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene in Oslo, and Smalls and Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York City. The latest release by FFEAR is Mirage (Jazzheads.com).
