Saturday evening at Vossa Jazz was an even greater cause for celebration than the performances to that point and still to come. Two of the festival's artists received news that they had been awarded Norwegian Grammy Awards:
Multi-instrumentalist Stian Carstensen (accordion, guitar, pedal steel guitar, Kaval, banjo) and his longstanding group Farmers Market won in the Open Category for the group's 2012 release, Slav to the Rhythm (Division Records). Carstensen was at Vossa Jazz unveiling a new commission that, in addition to Farmers Market cohorts, bassist Finn Guttormsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, featured a larger ensemble with keyboards, two violins (including rising star Ola Kvernberg), cello and harp, and was tremendously well- received by the capacity crowd.
Later that same evening, singer Sidsel Endresen and guitarist Stian Westerhus delivered another of the groundbreaking duo performances that have garnered them attention and critical acclaim in their native Norway and throughout Europe, only to learn that they, too, had won a Norwegian Grammy for their debut recording together, Didymoi Dreams (Rune Grammofon, 2012), for Best Jazz Album.
Reported by John Kelman, from the fortieth annual Vossa Jazz Festival in Voss, Norway.
