Maria is one of the first artists in the world to record major orchestras using a fan-funding method. 'Winter Morning Walks' was made possible by Executive Producer Little Johnny Koerber, Gold Participants Bill and Carol Bloemer, Silver Participants Justin Freed and Eugene Malinowski, and others through ArtistShare.
In 2004 Maria became the first artist to join ArtistShare and pioneer the fan-funding method with the release of her album 'Concert in the Garden,' the first web exclusive recording to receive a GRAMMY. She has collaborated with Gil Evans, studied with Bob Brookmeyer, was commissioned to compose for jazz orchestra and artists all over the world, has won 2 GRAMMY awards, and received many more nominations. In TIME Magazine, Terry Teachout said, To call Schneider the most important woman in jazz is missing the point two ways. She's a major composer - period."
Maria Schneider and Dawn Upshaw, two preeminent figures in jazz and classical music, team up for their very first partnership to create 'Winter Morning Walks.' Acclaimed soprano Dawn Upshaw is a multiple GRAMMY award winner and MacArthur fellow, and has performed at the Metropolitan Opera over 300 times. The LA Times praises her as one of the most consequential performers of our time."
In 'Winter Morning Walks,' Schneider conducts the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. She also works with poet Ted Kooser, one of America's most highly regarded poets, and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of Brazil's most beloved poets. Works from the album were recently performed at Carnegie Hall and the Ojai Festival.
ArtistShare would like to thank all participants for playing an integral role in the creation of this new music. ArtistShare is a platform that connects creative artists with fans in order to share the creative process and fund the creation of new artistic works.
