jazzahead! program – a round-the-world trip in music

2013, jazzahead! welcomes bands from 19 different countries to Bremen. Increased interest in participation in the German Jazz Expo.

Again, it was a tough choice: Four different juries faced a selection of 267 applications for the coveted live program that is part of the showcase festival. As with every past edition of jazzahead!, there will be one day dedicated to live performances of German bands, for the second time under the label of “German Jazz Expo”. After its premiere in 2012, the organizers of Messe Bremen logged an increase in applications from German musicians by nearly 17 percent.

“We received 57 showcase proposals for the German Jazz Expo alone, which we are very happy about. It shows the positive reception and acceptance of this new format.” says Sybille Kornitschky, project manager of jazzahead!. Europe continues to be at the heart of the showcase festival of jazzahead! with numerous applications from Germany, France and Norway, as well as significant growth in proposals from the Netherlands. Represented in the applicants’ pool for the first time this year were bands from Ireland, Jordan and Columbia.

Showcase festival gives insight into contemporary international jazz scene The showcase festival kicks off with the Israeli Night on Thursday, April 25th, 2013, at 8 PM at Exhibition Hall 2 and, with staggered starting times, Kulturzentrum Schlachthof. jazzahead!’s expectations were fully met with the diverse proposals sent in from this year’s partner country Israel – a variety of different styles from quiet sounds to jazz punk by the band “Malox” is represented. A total of seven bands show the stylistic bandwidth of Israeli contemporary jazz, marked by both European and oriental influences. On Friday, April 26th, 2013, the German Jazz Expo puts the showcases of ten German groups at the center of the attention. Amongst others, Berlin drummer Eric Schaefer and his new formation as well as Sebastian Gramss, also with his new trio fossile3, will be on stage. Following that evening, the Overseas Night presents three bands from Canada, an Australian combo and one band each from both the USA and Brazil. The European Jazz Meeting is the final item on the showcase agenda on Saturday, April 27th, 2013, with 16 bands from the “old continent”. With the trio of the English pianist Django Bates, the band Oliver’s Cinema of the Dutch trumpet player Eric Vloeimanns, as well as the Italian duo Girotto- Biondini, the audience can look forward to national stars as well as internationally already renowned musicians. With as many as five female band leaders, amongst them the Albanian singer Elina Duni and the English pianist Zoe Rahman, a positive tendency is perceptible that can be observed on the whole jazz scene.

German Jazz Expo is supported by the Initiative Musik Non-profit Project Company Ltd. with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media on the basis of a resolution passed by the German Bundestag.

International jurors

The line-up of the juries corresponds with the high standard of the national and international applicants. With the producer and vice director of the US-American Half Note label Jeff Levenson, jazzahead! has found a true fan: “jazzahead! is the one galvanizing event serving the jazz community. Via exhibitions, workshops and presentations, it brings together important gatekeepers - artists, agents, labels, supporters - with a professional mission to grow the art and business of jazz. To that end, it is an invaluable resource." The organizers of different jazz festivals such as the Trondheim Jazz Festival and the Vilnius Jazz Festival worked up a sweat over the selection just like jazzahead!’s artistic directors Uli Beckerhoff and Peter Schulze who are happy about the “incredible quality of the submitted proposals”.
