Paula Johns, a.k.a. “La Chanteuse de Jazz” comes from a musical family. Her mother is an opera singer and her father was a church organist and choir director. She originally studied acting at the Freedom Theater, but switched to studying singing at Temple University. She virtually defines the quality of versatility, switching easily from refreshing interpretations of the great American songbook to evocative salutes to the famous ladies of jazz, from Bessie Smith to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Indeed, her recent Ella Fitzgerald tribute shows were smash hits. No less than jazz vocal icon, the late Evelyn Simms, said of Johns Paula really knows how to tell a story with the humor of Pearl Bailey, the sass of Sarah Vaughan, the elegance of Nancy Wilson and the voice of an angel!
Jazz Bridge is a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization dedicated to assisting area jazz and blues musicians in need. Their Jazz Bridge in Cheltenham program is one in a series at this venue, along with four other area locales. For more details, visit Jazz Bridge.
