Jazz Bridge in Old City Philadelphia presents saxophonist Larry McKenna at the Arch Street Friends Meeting House — 4th and Arch Street in Philadelphia — on Thursday January 17th. Tickets are $10, $5 for students and are available only at the door. Show time is 7:30.
Larry McKenna has been a significant part of the Philadelphia Jazz world—and beyond—for decades, in virtually every type of musical setting. Indeed, he just received the annual Jazz Bridge Making a Difference Award. McKenna, who has backed giants like Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and spent time on the road with Woody Herman, is simply a beautiful player in every sense of the word. No matter what the nature of the performance, the musical style, the tune, or type of recording session (and he’s appeared on hundreds of CDs), he can always be counted on to swing tastefully, inventively, creatively and with feeling. His contributions to Jazz Education have been significant as well. He’s taught at University of the Arts, Temple University School of Music, West Chester University, Widener University, Community College of Philadelphia and privately. Many of his students have pursued successful careers in music, and they are the first ones to proudly tell you I studied with Larry.
