Isaac “Ike” Suggs, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Emmanuel Baptist Church, announced today that “another opportunity to experience the presence of God through the sound of Jazz is scheduled for Sunday, December 30th, during an Emmanuel Baptist Church hosted Jazz Vespers.” A special holiday edition of the popular Jazz Vespers series featuring Jimmy Heath will take place in the historic Emmanuel Baptist Church, 279 Lafayette Avenue, which is located in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, New York. The Jazz Vespers service will take place on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at 3:00 PM.

The theme of the service is: “Experience the Presence of God through the sound of Jazz” featuring The Jimmy Heath Quintet. The Jimmy Heath Quintet consists of Jimmy Heath (Tenor Sax), Jeb Patton (Piano), David Wong (Bass), Gregory Hutchinson (Drums), and Freddie Hendrix (Trumpet).

According to Reverend Norm Freeman, the Jazz Vespers service is itself a synthesis of several traditions, each finding a unifying voice through the unique musical heritage that we called jazz.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for everyone from our New York City community to worship in a relaxed setting and find God in the spacious freedom of jazz music. It is a musical tradition that gives us a voice to the hopes, dreams, frustrations and pain that expresses the human experience. Simply put, Jazz is the musical incense that collects and carries the prayers of a people.” stated Reverend Anthony L. Trufant, Senior Pastor, Emmanuel Baptist Church. Emmanuel Baptist Church’s Jazz Vespers performances are typically held on every 5th Sunday.
