This Bobby Zankel concert, a birthday celebration for the saxophone maestro himself, promises to be an evening to remember since this acclaimed artist will be appearing with his big band Warriors of the Wonderful Sound. Of Zankel, Jazz Times magazine said He’s headed to status as a prime jazz innovator. He served his apprenticeship with no less an innovator than pianist Cecil Taylor, and since Zankel made Philadelphia his home in 1975, he’s worked with Hank Mobley, Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir, and has studied with guitar master Dennis Sandole. Zankel’s ground-breaking compositions, which have included three ballets and one opera, have been recorded by Lester Bowie, Marilyn Crispell, and Ralph Peterson Jr., among many others. In 1995, he received the prestigious Pew Fellowship for his writing.
