"A prepossessing young trumpet player..."-New York Times “Possessing a forte that few seasoned musicians have attained... a brilliant talent whose luminosity is endless." —Birmingham Times

Over the past few months trumpeter John Raymond has performed to raving audiences with a new quartet at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, his trumpet/guitar front-lined quintet at Smalls Jazz Club as a part of the 10th annual FONT Festival, and he will now debut a chordless trio at the intimate Bar Next Door on Thursday October 18. Writing and arranging new music for each ensemble, Raymond continues to make his presence known - in New York City and beyond - as a trumpet player/composer on the rise.

Hailed as “a rapidly maturing artist with his own artistic vision" (JazzInk.blogspot.com), trumpeter John Raymond is quickly making a name for himself as an up-and-coming artist to keep an eye on. A finalist in the 2009 National Trumpet Competition, Raymond has performed as a leader or sideman at some of the nation's top venues including the Blue Note Jazz Club, the Dakota Jazz Club, and the Jazz Showcase among others, as well as at such notable events as the Austin City Limits Music Festival and on NPR's Toast of the Nation. In addition, he has performed with notable artists such as John Abercrombie, Eric Alexander, Linda Oh and Otis Brown III. Raymond's debut album “Strength & Song" (released in February 2012 and produced by legendary trumpeter & educator Jon Faddis) is already attracting national and international attention - “Strength & Song signals the arrival of an exciting new trumpet personality poised for greater things" (All About Jazz). The album includes pianist Gerald Clayton and guitarist Gilad Hekselman among others, and it features Raymond's original compositions that bring together world-class interplay and affecting, memorable melodies to create highly emotionally engaging music.

For his chordless trio, Raymond has joined forces with two, well-fitting accompanists - bassist Danny Weller and drummer Austin Walker. An accomplished and virtuosic musician, Weller has performed with artists such as Geoffrey Keezer, Charles McPherson and Jason Palmer and has quickly established himself as an in-demand bassist by many of his peers. Walker is equally as experienced, having backed musicians such as Chris Potter, Tony Malaby and Harvie S. and has performed at numerous notable venues around the world. Together Raymond, Weller and Walker will be performing a variety of selections: new original compositions written specifically for the group, cleverly arranged and deconstructed jazz standards, and carefully-chosen covers of songs by contemporary musicians such as Lionel Loueke, Nicholas Payton and others. Employing the full range of colors and timbres available to the group through the use of various mutes, percussion and extended techniques, Raymond and company present a unique and fresh take on the classic chordless trio. Their performance at the Bar Next Door is surely one not to miss.
