Adds Vocal and Acoustic Piano to Their Distinctive Sound

New York Electric Piano forges new ground with King Mystery, just released on New York Electric Piano’s own label, Buffalo Puppy Records. King Mystery, the band’s fourth album, builds on the original acoustic trio (pianist Pat Daugherty, bassist Tim Givens, and drummer Aaron Comess) with the addition of new members, keyboardist Leon Gruenbaum, sax and flute player Till Bebler and singer Deanna Kirk, adding vocals and acoustic piano to the band’s original sound.

New York Piano’s 2004 self-titled debut landed in CMJ’s Top 20 and their Citizen Zen (Midlantic Records) and subsequent Blues in Full Moon CDs were also critically acclaimed. Comprised of diverse Daughtry originals, King Mystery not only acknowledges the band’s past but also moves them to the cutting edge, taking a unique new direction that takes as much from jazz as it does from the various band members’ experience on the rock and pop music scenes.

Daughterty, the band’s pianist and composer is the piano soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company, and he has played with Kurt Rosenwinkle, Grant Green Jr., Phillip Wilson, and Rob Wasserman. Drummer Aaron Comess is a founding member of the Spin Doctors and he has performed with Mike Stern, Roy Hargrove, Aaron Neville, Isaac Hayes and Blues Traveler. Bassist Tim Givens has performed and recorded with Lou Donaldson, Ray Bryant, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Curtis Fuller, and Herman Foster.

Bringing a new dimension to Pat Daugherty’“mysterious” compositions are: multi-instrumentalist Leon Gruenbaum, who plays with Vernon Reid and James “Blood” Ulmer and who created his own instrument, the Samchillian; Till Behler, who has recorded with the Brazilian Girls, Arnie Lawrence, and Sly and the Family Stone; and the extraordinary vocalist Deanna Kirk, who has performed at Lincoln Center, Birdland and Kitano’s.

To support the release of King Mystery, New York Electric Piano will be performing in New York City at a record release party at the Gershwin Hotel on November 13 at 8PM, where they’ll be shooting a video for the song “Temple Tantrum”, featuring members of the Martha Graham Dance Company. On Nov. 16 at 6 p.m., New York Electric Piano will perform an acoustic set at Rockwood Music Hall. They will be joined by special guest trumpeter Willie Waldman from Snoop Dogg's band at their performance at The Annex on the Lower East Side on December 8.
