New Orleans Trumpeter Leroy Jones Performed At Super Bowl VI In 1972

Published:
Leroy Jones Super Bowl VI, on January 16, 1972, was played in New Orleans' Tulane Stadium between the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins. The halftime entertainment consisted of a “Salute to Louis Armstrong", a tribute to Crescent City's best-known trumpeter who had passed away the previous year, on July 6, 1971.

The show featured a then 13-year-old Leroy Jones

as “Little Louis Armstrong" along with other performers the Onward Brass Band, Danny Barker, Carol Channing, Ella Fitzgerald and Al Hirt. The Onward Brass Band played “High Society" and accompanied Carol Channing on “Hello Dolly."

Mr. Jones remembers vividly the excitement of the event and also watching the last half of the game with his parents on the sidelines, in the crisp 39-degree January weather.

Now, over forty years later, Leroy Jones continues making an international career and spreading the music of his hometown across continents. He has been a central figure in New Orleans' jazz scene since the mid-seventies and continuously expands and refines his musicianship in ways that manifest his multifaceted talent. Having worked with brass bands, traditional and modern jazz outfits, big bands, R&B and Top40 groups, and gospel and blues ensembles, Jones is not only known for his trumpet playing but also his composing, arranging, and singing.
