New Jazz It Up! Episode Features: Kenny Garrett, Take 6, Hank Jones and Gene Bertoncini, Vintage Bill Evans and Jazzmobile 45th Anniversary Celebration

New York, NY – Saxophonist Kenny Garrett and vocal group Take 6 headline as the featured artists of the latest episode of Jazz it Up! Garrett’s blistering alto sax fronts a high octane ensemble at the Iridium club, while Take 6 offers intense renditions of cuts from Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. During the second of their two featured numbers, members of Take 6 explain why they finally released a straight-ahead jazz recording, and Garrett discusses his current stage of musical development as well as the spiritual aspects of his art.

JAZZ NEWS: Jazzmobile, founded by Dr. Billy Taylor 45 years ago, recently celebrated its anniversary at Gracie Mansion, home to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spoke of the importance of jazz and Jazzmobile. Adding commentary are Dr. Taylor, Robin Bell-Stevens (Executive Director), Darryl Gay (Chairman), and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate Levin. Pianist Christian Sands, a young protege of Dr. Taylor, also performs.

VINTAGE: Influential pianist Bill Evans performs “Israel” in a trio setting in a 1964 performance in Sweden.

JAZZ FRIENDS: In a humorous discussion about a gig with Benny Goodman years ago, guitar guru Gene Bertoncini and piano seer Hank Jones share a moment at the Jazz Journalists Association awards ceremony caught on video exclusively for Jazz it Up!

JAZZ CAMEOS: Todd Barkan, Rashied Ali, Cyrus Chestnut, and Jon Gordon appear between segments to urge viewers to Keep Swingin’!

Jazz it Up! dedicates this episode to the memory of electric guitar pioneer Les Paul, composer, band leader and theoretician George Russell, and drummer Rashied Ali, who answered the question “What Is Free Jazz" in the second episode of this season.
