New England Conservatory Appoints Jazz Trombonist Andre Hayward to Faculty, Conductor Amy Lieberman As Interim Director of Choral Activities

Andre Hayward, jazz trombonist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, has been named to the New England Conservatory faculty. Amy Lieberman, an alumna of NEC's Preparatory School, will become NEC's Interim Director of Choral Activities for the school year 2004-5.

Born in Houston in 1973, Andre Hayward started playing trombone and tuba at age 11, performing in his junior high school jazz band and studying with local trombonist Steve Baxter. He attended Texas Southern University and his first professional gig was touring with Roy Hargrove in Europe. During the summers, he performed at Walt Disney World, backing up such stars as Joe Williams, Diane Schuur, Eartha Kitt, Rosemary Clooney and others. He also played for five years with the late singer / bandleader Betty Carter as well as ensembles such as the Ellington Orchestra under Mercer Ellington. In 2003, he was chosen over 70 other entrants to win the $20,000 scholarship and grand prize in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He currently plays with the Dave Holland Big Band and performed on that ensemble's debut album, What Goes Around.

Currently studying for her doctorate at Boston University, Amy Lieberman received her B.A. in Music/Piano from Stanford University and her M.M. in Choral Conducting from Yale University. She has held a number of teaching positions at Wilkes University, the Orchestra of St. Luke's public schools program, the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, and the Belvoir Terrace Fine and Performing Arts Center in Lenox, MA. She has served as assistant conductor of the Cantata Singers and Ensemble, and led various women's, men's and mixed choruses at B.U., Yale, Stanford and Wilkes University. She has also conducted orchestras at BU, Yale, Stanford, and the Berkshires. Most recently, she led the Benjamin Britten War Requiem, at the American Choral Directors' Association Convention in Boston. A soprano and pianist, she has given recitals and appeared as soloist in numerous performances as well as serving as pre-concert lecturer for the Cantata Singers.

Through its Preparatory School, School of Continuing Education, and Community Collaboration Programs, it provides training and performance opportunities for children, pre-college students, adults, and seniors. Through its outreach projects, it allows young musicians to engage with non-traditional audiences in schools, hospitals, and nursing homes-thereby bringing pleasure to new listeners and enlarging the universe for classical music and jazz.

NEC presents more than 600 free concerts each year in Jordan Hall, its world-renowned, 100-year old, beautifully-restored concert hall. These programs range from solo recitals to chamber music to orchestral programs to opera scenes. Every year, NEC's opera studies department also presents two fully staged opera productions at the Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston.
