National Trust Considers Buying Abbey Road Studios

The National Trust, a British preservation charity, has emerged as a possible buyer for Abbey Road Studios in London.

A statement on its Web site says that because of an astonishing outpouring of public emotion in response to a suggestion by a BBC radio announcer, the organization would consider buying the complex, where the Beatles recorded most of their music. According to unconfirmed reports, the studios longtime owner, EMI, is entertaining offers to sell it.

Its not often that the public spontaneously suggests that we should acquire a famous building, the statement quoted a National Trust spokesman as saying. However, Abbey Road recording studios appear to be very dear to the nations heart to the extent that we will take soundings as to whether a campaign is desirable or even feasible.

Abbey Road would add to the National Trusts already substantial Beatles-related properties. We already own the house Paul McCartney grew up in, a spokeswoman told The Guardian, and John Lennons too, so it wouldnt be out of place for us to own Abbey Road as well.

EMI has not commented on reports that the studio may be for sale.
