The performances begin with a concert at The Fringe Club on March 29th. This performance is the debut of The Nate Wong Trio in Hong Kong, an ensemble that will perform Wong’s original compositions. Joining him will be New York based guitarist Teriver Cheung and the New York native Bob Mocarsky on the organ.
Says Wong about this concert, “I’m thrilled to be playing with Teriver and Bob, I picked these musicians partly for their New York style of play which harkens back to the cutting edge East Coast style of jazz I played when living in Boston.”
Following this concert will be three shows between April 18th and April 25th with pianist Ted Lo and Ecuadorian bassist and Berklee masters student Daniel Toledo.
Wong explains, “Ted Lo is the elder statesman of jazz in Hong Kong, the biggest name and deservedly so. He has played with all time greats such as Ron Carter and Joe Lovano and I am honored that he would make music with me.”
As well as a drummer Wong is an accomplished composer. Wong describes his compositions, “My songs are fun and direct, they are written to tug on your heart strings or to make you laugh. Sometimes I write for full ensemble and sometimes I write songs specifically for me to play on my melodica (a keyboard instrument similar in sound to an accordion). In the latter case I don’t even give the band sheet music with the melody, just the chords, the melody is between me and the audience and I can alter it as the moment calls for.”
Wong hopes to continually bring his music to the people of Hong Kong but for now, “I’m completely focused on these performances and I lose sleep getting excited for them!”
