“A gorgeous record balanced between two worlds, Two Rivers is a stirring example of the creative possibilities of international jazz in the 21st century."—Troy Collins, All About Jazz dot com. Trumpeter, santoor player, vocalist, and composer, Amir ElSaffar's depth of emotion and authenticity orchestrates a “meeting of the music" between maqam—- a traditional Middle Eastern melodic form and traditional jazz. Leading a six-piece ensemble featuring Rudresh Mahanthappa and Nasheet Waits, ElSaffar weaves a seamless soundscape for the virgin ear to explore new forward-thinking possibilities within the world of 21st century jazz. A hypnotic carpet ride that will expand the heart and mind of jazz enthusiasts, performing live will be: Amir ElSaffar on trumpet, santoor and vocal; Rudresh Mahanthappa on alto saxophone; Zaafer Tawil on violin, oud and percussion; Tareq Abboushi on buzuq; Carlo DeRosa on bass; and Nasheet Waits on drums.

Two Rivers by Amir ElSaffar has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America's 2009 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Amir ElSaffar's Two Rivers will be followed by Michele Rosewoman and New Yor-Uba featuring Pedro Martinez (Oct. 23), followed by the Jazz on Vine gem of the season: the Philadelphia debut of Dave Holland's Big Band (Dec. 11).
