June 6, 2005; Monterey, California; The Monterey Jazz Festival has announced the international East Coast tour schedule for the 2005 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Monterey Jazz Festival’s ensemble showcasing top jazz musicians from high schools across the U.S. and Canada. Included in the tour are performances at some of the world’s most prestigious jazz venues.
Created as a part of the Monterey Jazz Festival's continuing commitment to jazz education, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra includes some of the top high school level jazz students from all parts of the U.S. and boasts one member from Canada for 2005. The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra represents the very highest level of musicianship as evidenced by past members of the ensemble (formerly known as the MJF High School All-Star Big Band) including pianists Benny Green and Patrice Rushen, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Chad Wackerman, saxophonists Joshua Redman and Dave Koz, to name a few.
Under the direction of Mr. Paul Contos, the ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of the most challenging big band literature available. Members of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra were selected through a rigorous audition process that included review by a national panel of judges comprised of professional jazz musician/educators. For the first time in the 35-year history of the high school all-star band, the Monterey Jazz Festival invited auditions via video tape in addition to in-person auditions, which took place during the Next Generation Festival, April 8 - 10 2005 in Monterey.
On Sunday, July 3, NGJO performs at New York City’s Sweet Rhythm, a world-class jazz club and restaurant occupying the Greenwich Village space of the legendary Sweet Basil jazz club. For this engagement, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will feature special guest saxophonist Sherman Irby. An extraordinary improviser and composer known for his warm sound and pure melodicism, Sherman Irby has performed and recorded in seminal projects with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Roy Hargrove. He has released two recordings on Blue Note Records, and his latest album, “Organomics” (Black Warrior) is being released in 2005. The NGJO featuring Sherman Irby will perform on July 3 at 8pm and 10pm at Sweet Rhythm, 88 Seventh Avenue South, New York, NY 10014. As part of JALC’s Monday evening “Upstarts!” series, which features emerging jazz musicians, NGJO with special guest saxophonist Sherman Irby will contribute fireworks of its own kind to New York City with its performance of challenging big band repertoire in the great American tradition.
