With 19 concerts over seven days (Feb. 20-25, Feb. 27), Winterruption, the annual winter music festival at Granville Island's Performance Works, has music for just about any jazz taste.
You can hear straight-ahead music (Altered Laws), hard bebop (Ugetsu), European improv (Eric Vloeimans Fugimundi Trio), Parisian cafe sounds (Mimosa), a string quartet (Quatuor Bozzini) and experimental (Rene Lussier).
You can also hear bands and musicians who, if all the stars line up correctly, are on the cusp of greatness.
One of these is the Jodi Proznick Quartet, which plays Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 10 p.m., and is led by bassist Proznick.
At age 34, Port Coquitlam's Proznick has accumulated some serious hardware in her musical career. Her quartet received the Galaxie Rising Star award at the 2004 TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
Following the 2006 release of the quartet's debut CD, Foundations, Proznick captured three National Jazz Awards, for best album, best acoustic group and bassist of the year. She repeated as best bassist the following year.
