Tue Mar 27
8:30PM JOEL NEWTON SITUATION
(Joel Newton, guitar;Christian Howes, violin;Brian Charette, organ/ keyboard;Eric Halvorson, drums) The Joel Newton Situation made a name for itself during long Knitting Factory Tap Bar runs in the late 90's. JNS's current incarnation takes its foundation of jazz, groove and sound exploration and adds an adventurous dose of group- improvisation. Together with an expanded array of idiomatic influences, reflecting Newton's long and varied musical past, the band's fluid ingredients keep the listener always guessing what's around the corner.

“...striking skills...Newton performs on a par with seminal players like Ben Monder and Bill Frisell." Mark Turner, ALL ABOUT JAZZ Cover $7

Wed Mar 28
8:30PM SOUL OF THE BLUES

Thu Mar 29
8:30PM THE JAMIE BAUM SEPTET
(Jamie Baum, flute, alto flute;Shane Ensley, trumpet;Doug Yates, alto sax, bass clarinet;Vincent Chancey, french horn;George Colligan, piano;Johannes Weidenmller, bass;Jeff Hirshfield, drums) With this band, together since'99, Baum explores the connection between improvised music and composition and draws from several influences to create a very personal and refreshing canvas for this unique instrumentation. An extremely talented group, this Septet boasts a cast of in-demand New York players who, leaders in their own right, offer very individual sounds to create an exciting and varied palette.

“...As good as these compositions are, it's the combination of composition and improvising that makes this album so fulfilling. Baum herself is a terrific jazz musician, with impressive control, dynamics, ideas, and swing. With Moving Forward, Standing Still, Jamie Baum has made a serious and possibly significant contribution to jazz." -- ALL ABOUT JAZZ

“I recall a couple of fine previous CDs (on GM & Konnex) from this fine flutist and composer, but that didn't prepare me for this fabulous gem. Ms. Baum is an extraordinary composer (and) a sensational flutist, taking a number of superb solos throughout this release. This is an immensely engaging work on many levels, I hope I get a chance to hear this septet playing live." --- Downtown Music Gallery review (NYC) Cover $10
