Meridian Arts Ensemble Plays the Music of Applebaum, Jacobs & Revueltas at Symphony Space in New York, October 9th

The Meridian Arts Ensemble presents newly commissioned works by Mark Applebaum and Ed Jacobs, and works written by Latin American composers, at Symphony Space, Monday, October 9, 7:00 p.m. The program will feature special guest, Mark Applebaum performing, with the Ensemble, his work, “Magnetic North," on the Mouseketier Electro-acoustic, a “sound-sculpture" with live electronics.

Applebaum explains: “The Mouseketier is an electro-acoustic percussion contraption, a musical Frankenstein built out of assorted junk and found objects: threaded rods, nails, wire strings stretched through pulleys and turnbuckles, plastic combs, bronze braising rod blow-torched and twisted, doorstops, shoehorns, ratchets, squeaky steel caster wheels, springs, corrugated copper gas tubing, metal 'push' and 'pull' door signs, toilet tank flotation bulbs, Astroturf, and mousetraps. These disparate elements are mounted on three soundboards and, assisted by contact pickups, amplified through speakers. To collect parts for the Mouseketier I rummaged through junkyards, garages, surplus stores, and warehouses.

“'Magnetic North' is a piece that aspires--with enthusiasm, vigor, absurdity, and maybe even some belligerence--to remind us that there are many ways to make music. The piece, as an artistic project, is most noteworthy as collaboration with the Meridian Arts Ensemble and consists of brass quintet passages alternating with improvised solos."

The Meridian Arts Ensemble program will also include, “Passed Time" - Ed Jacobs (New York Premiere written for the Meridian Arts Ensemble); “En par por los levantes" - Ana Lara(New York Premiere, written for the Meridian Arts Ensemble); “Ocho por Radio" - Silvestre Revueltas.

The Meridian Arts Ensemble'seighth CD, Brink is released on Channel Classics and features works by Elliott Sharp, David Sanford and Nick Didkovsky. The Ensemble are known for its recording and performance of Frank Zappa's material.
