MATTHIAS LUPRI QUINTET with Bruce Gertz

Mainstream contemporary jazz vibraphonist Matthias Lupri, will be performing music from the release of his latest cd“Shadow of the Vibe", (Chartmaker Jazz CMG5060) with his quintet in concert on Thursday, July 20, 2000 at the Quincy Festival, Mainstreet Quincy, Ma at 12 noon (Free) and Friday, July 21, 2000 at the Acton Jazz Cafe, 452 Great Rd., Rte. 2A, Acton. (978) 263-6161. (Admission $10). Show starts 9PM. Performing with Lupri will be Steven Kirby (g), Bill Vint (s), Bruce Gertz (b), and David Jamrog (d).

“Shadow of the Vibe" features nine original compositions by Lupri, plus songs by Sam Rivers and by Boris Weidenfeld. It also features saxophonist George Garzone, bassist John Lockwood and drummer Sebastiaan de Krom. Lupris cd received heavy radio airplay and climbed the jazz charts in the USA and Canada.



Born in Germany, Lupri grew up in Kansas,USA and Alberta, Canada. He studied drums and began playing professionally as a teenager in blues, rock and country music bands. In his early 20's, while studying music in college, he became fascinated with jazz vibraphone music from listening to a recording of the legendary Gary Burton. Lupri recollects, “It totally changed my whole approach to music. For the next five years, while I was still on the road with rock bands, I would practice my vibes every day in my hotel room." Having found a new musical expression with the vibes, he enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study with his mentor Gary Burton.

Lupris debut CD “Window Up Window Down" (Chartmaker Jazz PDP1020) charted in the Top 40 Gavin and Top 15 CMJ Jazz Charts in 1998 and he also recently performed at the 1999 Boston MIX Festival at Foxboro Stadium, Montreal, Toronto, The Regatta Bar in Cambridge and The Knitting Factory in New York.
