The critically acclaimed Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Bobby Sanabria, will be bringing the exciting rhythms of Afro-Cuban music to Jazz@Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on Monday, April 20 (7:30 pm and 9:30 pm) in a special event that will be celebrating JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH.

That evening, they will be commemorating the birthdays of two of the greatest stars of Latin jazz TITO PUENTE, who was born on April 20, 1923 (passing away on May 31, 2000); and NEA Jazz Master and Living Legend CANDIDO CAMERO, who will be turning 88 on April 22. To be performed will be special music in their honor, selected for the occasion by Bobby Sanabria. The great Candido will also be on hand for the concert.

The night will also celebrate the release of KENYA REVISITED LIVE!!!, a CD by the Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra and Bobby Sanabria that was recorded live in a concert that took place on April 1, 2008 at the School. The April 1 concert showcased the 50th Anniversary of Machito and The Afro-Cubans 1957 Jazz Masterwork “Kenya”, and this recording will be the first in a series released with Manhattan School of Music in conjunction with Jazzheads Records.

Bobby Sanabria, the multiple Grammy-nominated drummer and percussionist, says about the recording, “Now 50 years after it was released to the public, we honor Mario Bauz, Machito, and all of the musicians who participated on the original recording with KENYA REVISITED LIVE!!! Recorded live in concert, you’ll hear a new generation of players tackle this incredible music as it is re-worked with new progressive arrangements that reflect the current state of jazz virtuosity. Rejoice as the torch is passed to these young fire breathing dragons who have dedicated their lives to America’s greatest art form, jazz, and the branch of that art form that represents all of the America’s, Latin jazz.”

Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is located in the Time Warner Center at Broadway & 60th Street. For tickets and information, call 212 258 9595. These concerts are traditionally sold out, so get your tickets now.
