On May 9, twenty Jazz and classical music leading artists will converge upon The Kitano New York Hotel's Bar Lounge for a special “Love For Japan" benefit concert in support of the Japan relief efforts. In the wake of one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, the tragedy in Japan has resonated across the globe, hitting especially close to home at the Kitano New York. Relief efforts are being made worldwide, through organizations such as the Red Cross and the Japan Society, to aid the victims of this intangible devastation. Consistently featuring various programs designed to endorse and showcase the fine arts, the Kitano New York would now like to take this opportunity to turn its emphasis on culture and art into an effort to give back to its country of origin. For the month of May the Kitano invites guests and locals alike to simultaneously experience the Kitano's renowned live jazz performances and join the global community in aiding the hundreds of thousands of Japanese affected by the disaster.

The two-set event, one of the largest relief efforts to date in New York City, will feature Japanese and American solo pianists, flutists, vocalists, bassists and sax, culminating in a special surprise performance by a leading Jazz recording artist. Additional surprise musicians are expected to perform in the benefit concert. The announcement was made by the hotel's Artistic Director, Gino Moratti, who oversees the Bar Lounge's weekly Jazz performances featuring legendary and emerging performers. A donation of $50 is appreciated and will allow entry to two sets from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Reservations are required for both sets and can be made by calling (212) 885-7119.

The Kitano New York's Bar Lounge is known for its longstanding reputation as one of the city's best locales for experiencing live performances by legendary jazz musicians. “Love For Japan" was conceived by the hotel's General Manager, Clement Carey, as a way to honor and support the people of Japan for whom the hotel has a great affinity as the first and only Japanese Hotel in New York City. “As a Japanese owned hotel we of course are heartened by the recent tragedy. The people of Japan are resilient and will overcome. This tribute conveys the message of renewal and hope. The Kitano is known for our rich musical offerings; what better way to support Japan than through a language that is universally understood—music;" said Carey.

The “Love for Japan" musical benefit is one of several offerings the hotel has initiated in support of the relief efforts in Japan. A Sakura Hanami floral composition was installed in its lobby through April 20 in the spirit of Cherry Blossom season (renewal and hope). Additionally, the critically-acclaimed Hakubai Restaurant is offering a Hanami Bento box lunch priced at $39.00 per person and Hanami Okonomi Kaiseki dinner priced at $95 per person through April 27, 2011. A percentage of each lunch and dinner purchased will be donated to various relief efforts.

The Kitano New York opened its doors in 1973 as New York's first Japanese hotel. Thirty-eight years later it remains the first and only Japanese owned hotel and has become an integral part of one of Manhattan's historic neighborhoods, Murray Hill. Located on fashionable Park Avenue at 38th Street, the 18-story hotel towers over some of New York City's most magnificent turn-of-the-century dwellings, offering spectacular views of some of city landmarks. The hotel features 149 guestrooms, including 17 contemporary suites and a one-of-a-kind Japanese Tatami Suite. The Kitano New York is home to the critically acclaimed Michelin-rated Hakubai Restaurant where traditional Kaiseki delicacies are served. The Kitano New York is also home to live Jazz music featuring live performances by legendary Jazz musicians who descend upon the hotel's bar lounge weekly to perform classic and contemporary Jazz music. The Kitano New York is a member of Summit Hotels & Resorts, a consortium of deluxe hotels worldwide.
