Litchfield Jazz Festival has just launched an indiegogo.com fundraising campaign for its Litchfield Jazz Camp. The goal is to raise $10,000 to help send 10 youngsters in need, for one week each, to the 16-year-old summer camp. Litchfield Jazz Camp, located in Kent CT at the Kent School runs for 5 weeks from July 8 to August 10 and culminates in the world renowned Litchfield Jazz Festival which returns this summer to the Goshen Fairgrounds, in Goshen, CT August 10-12.

The Festival, which the Jazz Camp students attend and at which they perform on their own stage in between mainstage acts, features the Grammy winning Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, the iconic flutist, Hubert Laws, the Four Freshmen, the New Orleans favorite the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and today’s best jazzers, including pianist Benny Green, trumpeter and Monk Competition winner, Ambrose Akinmusire, Mac Arthur Genius award winner, Miguel Zenon, six-time Grammy winning baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan and many others.

Recent cuts in State of Connecticut support for arts and arts education encouraged the not-for-profit, Litchfield Performing Arts, parent of the Jazz programs, to strike out on its own and try some innovative approaches to fundraising. The Indiegogo campaign is the first of several efforts. Coming up next is an event at a private home in South Kent, on April 29th. Billed as “An Afternoon of Jazz & Friends,” the event features the outstanding pianist Helen Sung and top students from Litchfield Jazz Camp.

The final fund raiser for this season is an auction which will culminate at the Opening Night Jazz Party at the 17th Annual Litchfield Jazz Festival on August 10. Organized with help from Lark Mason, a star of the popular Antiques Roadshow and founder of iGavel, an on-line auction site, an on-line auction will begin several weeks before the festival and end on August 15. A brief live and silent auction at the festival will offer items like a vacation in Eluhtera, an island in the Bahamas, a week at a Lake House in Litchfield County, Jazz Memorabilia, dinners and music in private homes and more.

To help with fundraising for scholarships for students in need, the Festival directs you to indiegogo.com. For tickets or more information on how you can help please call Litchfield Jazz Festival at 860-361-6285 or email [email protected]. Litchfield Jazz Camp and Litchfield Jazz Festival are productions of Litchfield County’s 31-year-old not-for-profit, Litchfield Performing Arts, Inc.
