E. Y. “Yip" Harburg was an artist of extraordinary personal courage and compassion. The man who brought the “Rainbow" to both Finian and “The Wizard of Oz," Harburg was quoted as saying, “The lyricist, like any artist, cannot be neutral. He should be committed to the side of humanity." In his lyrics, great humor, fantasy and serious social satire glow together like hues of that rainbow, and “The Wizard of Words" highlights his most poignant and delightful.

Bistro Award winner and jazz-pop vocalist Karen Oberlin, acclaimed recording artist and 2007 Nightlife Award finalist for her recent show, “Like Love; The Popular Songs of Andre Previn," has loved Harburg's lyrics since childhood. Oberlin says, “Harburg's lyrics are transcendent, and at what time have we needed to both laugh and cry about the state of humanity more than now? Harburg inspires both, often simultaneously." Ms. Oberlin, with musical direction by Tedd Firth, explores the witty, wise wordsmith's hits and rarities with equal fervor. Sean Smith is on bass.

Oberlin's singing, called “moving" and “velvety" by Entertainment Weekly, has inspired the critics:

“(Oberlin) invests ballads with a breathless intimacy and lays the allure at the listener's feet." -- Robert L. Daniels, Variety

“Ms. Oberlin's vocals can only be described as heavenly, and her performance flawless. You simply must see and hear (her)... (It) is perfection!" -- Stu Hamstra, Cabaret Hotline

“(Oberlin) presents (songs) as lusciously lyrical tales told for the very first time." -- David Murphy, Time Out NY

“Riveting... Exciting... Poignant... Oberlin mixes exquisite singing with pithy and charming patter. A gifted writer and performer!" -- Barbara & Scott Siegel, Theatermania.com
