The July, 2011 issue of the Scooby-Sax Newsletter has been published. The latest issue of this educational resource focuses on the analysis of transcribed solos by Al Cohn, Hank Mobley, Zoot Sims, and John Coltrane on the tune, “Tenor Conclave." The four solos make a fascinating study in the similarities and differences among the tenor saxophone soloists. The analysis of these four solos on “I Got Rhythm" chord changes focuses on such techniques as chromatic approaches, guide tone lines, sequences, chord alterations, bebop and blues scales, digital patterns, riff development, and chord substitutions. Each solo is analyzed for the use of these techniques and variations in their use among the four solos are highlighted.

Suggestions are included to help players incorporate these ideas into their practice routines. These solos by four tenor saxophone masters yield many jazz improvisation ideas and a method is presented to internalize these ideas.
