Joseph Jarman and Chris Chalfant duo Thursday, August 4 Deep Listening Space 75 Broadway, Kingston, NY http://www.deeplistening.org, 845-338-5964

Joseph Jarman and Chris Chalfant will be performing a duo concert at Deep Listening Space, 75 Broadway, Kingston, NY on August 4 at 8:30 PM. Jarman and Chalfant have worked closely together in music, Buddhist practice and Aikido for fifteen years. They have collaborated as leaders for the Lifetime Visions Orchestra since 2001, including their opening concert on September 23, first to be a memorial concert for John Coltrane, which was changed to a memorial for 9/11 victims. They also created the Dojo Band (now on hiatus) in 1996.

Joseph Jarman has worked closely with Buddhism and music for the past 40 years. His dharma name, given to him by the late Shaku Gyoko Saito, is Go-An, which means “carrier of the sound of Buddha". His significant creative output has been devoted to the AACM, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and the Brooklyn Buddhist Association. The Jikishinkan Dojo (home of the Brooklyn Buddhist Association and the Lifetime Visions Orchestra), has produced many concerts over the past twenty years, with such notables as Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, Thomas Buckner, Thulani Davis, Anthony Davis, Myra Melford, Dawn Saito and others. Many musicians have practiced Aikido and Buddhism including Myra Melford, Michele Navazio, Ken Yamazaki and Chris Chalfant.

As a member of the Brooklyn Buddhist Association, Chris Chalfant has created many programs through the dojo, including Sonic Meditations retreat (Zen and music practice), Aikido and Zen seminars and retreats, and Joseph Jarman's 65th birthday party. Joseph Jarman and Chris Chalfant's recorded material together includes Lifetime Visions Orchestra's Vision Festival 2002, Love and Light (Chalfant), the Dojo Band Live at the Knitting Factory, and All in Good Time (Chalfant).

Lifetime Visions Orchestra has performed at the Vision Festival, Nancy Pulsations Festival (France), and at clubs, peace events and special occasions. This concert marks the beginning of Chalfant and Jarman's new association as duo partners. They perform anything from meditational music to the very most avant-jazz. Their musical work has direct connection to their practice of Buddhism and Aikido, as all of these practices entail being in the moment and fearlessness.
