The Fourth Stage of the National Arts Centre (NAC) is presenting an encore series of five concerts featuring renowned bassist John Geggie and special guests. Last year's sold out series was a critical and artistic triumph. At the series launch on Saturday, October 19, 2002, at 8pm, Geggie welcomes trumpeter and vocalist Floyd Standifer Jr. from Seattle, WA and Toronto pianist Nancy Walker. You will be entranced by an evening of classic interpretations of the Great American Songbook as well as some originals played by this trio of good musical friends.

A native of the Gatineau Valley, John Geggie is delighted to be returning to the 4th Stage and a new series of concert encounters involving a special selection of unique guests. Mr. Geggie is extremely active in the Ottawa-Gatineau region as a freelance double bass player and teacher. He has performed as a member of the award-winning jazz group Chelsea Bridge and the Juno-nominated world beat group The Angstones. This past summer, John continued his touring, recording and performance commitments with Juno-award winner pianist D. D. Jackson in Canada and the U.S. His concert appearances have also taken him to Europe. John's credits include performances with such jazz luminaries as Gene Lees, Henry Mancini, David Murray, Andrew Cyrille and Billy Hart. For the past four years, John Geggie has hosted the Jam Sessions for the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, thus sharing the stage with such international artists as Courtney Pine, Wynton Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane and Joe Lovano. Mr. Geggie has also recorded and performed with such unique singer/songwriters as Lynn Miles and Ian Tamblyn. Earlier this fall with the help of the Canada Council for the Arts, John Geggie spent an intensive period studying in Sweden with two of that country's foremost improvising bass players, Palle Danielsson and Anders Jormin. Geggie maintains a busy schedule of concerts with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra.

Floyd Standifer Jr. is active as a trumpet, flugelhorn and tenor saxophone player, vocalist, writer, arranger and educator and many consider him to be the patriarch of Seattle jazz today. Montreal-born, Toronto-based pianist and composer Nancy Walker is a frequent accompanist of Toronto-area vocalists Melissa Stylianou, Sara Latendresse, Lisa Martinelli, Cathy Menard and Maureen Kennedy. She also has three CDs in her own name.

UPCOMING CONCERTS IN THIS SERIES

On December 7, 2002 Geggie is pleased to have as guests the versatile and much sought-after vocalist Christine Duncan and Chelsea Bridge's Jean Martin on drums, percussion, and loops.

February 8, 2003 you will hear music from the Balkans, the Bayou, East European origins and Yiddish poetry--perhaps even an aria. John's guests will be Dave Wall, vocals, Peter Kiesewalter on saxophones and keyboards and Danny Artuso on pedal steel guitar.

On May 3, 2003, Geggie features Tena Palmer and Holly Arsenault for an evening of Eastern inspired creations and the series finale features an array of string players and their instruments on May 24, 2003.

A series subscription for all five concerts is $75.00 before October 19, 2002 available only at the NAC Box Office. Tickets of $18.00 are available at the NAC Box Office (in person) and through Ticketmaster (with surcharges) at 755-1111.
