Thursday, March 24th The Slipper Room 167 Orchard St. @ Stanton Lower East Side, NYC 10pm / $8 http://www.slipperroom.com

Downtown NYC burlesque lounge, The Slipper Room welcomes songwriter JC Hopkins and his Biggish Band on Thursday, March 24th, performing original songs based in bop and swing. The band pulls together some of New York City's best working jazz musicians, featuring the vocals of Southern-bred, Harlem-based Queen Esther.

Queen Esther's strong, soulful sound is a hybrid of the music of her Southern childhood and what she heard on the free-form radio of her childhood: 1970's rock, sanctified gospel, and old-time country. An interest in American songs, not separated by race or class, has driven her musical collaborations from jazz and blues to alt-rock and trip-hop. Queen Esther's distinctive style earned her acclaim as a lead in George C. Wolfe's production of “Harlem Song" at the Apollo Theater. She has collaborated with jazz guitar icon James “Blood" Ulmer on projects including “The 52nd Street Blues Project" (Chesky, 2004). Her classic voice is instantly identifiable. Queen Esther articulates the original songs of the JC Hopkins Biggish Band with clarity and style, as the band's talented players swing behind her.
