Jazzmobile and Sweet Rhythm present Alexis Cole - Winner of the 2007 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition in New York City

July 31, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. Join Alexis for a celebration of her victory. Jazzmobile and Sweet Rhythm NYC present the Winner of the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition. This is her last big downtown appearance before heading on her Japanese Tour! Joining her is pianist Jon Cowherd (Brian Blade Fellowship, Lizz Wright) and as a rare treat, bassist Steve Haines, as he takes a year sabbatical from directing the UNC program in Greensboro, NC.

Alexis released Zingaro, her third CD on Canopy Jazz, Monday, July 9, 2007, at the Zinc Bar in NYC. The packed club quickly fell silent as Cole and bassist Jeffry Eckels started off the set. They were then joined by guitarist Ron Affif, and performed songs from the new CD. Cole narrated the selections with relevant personal stories. The climax was Zingaro in which Cole's Indian Classical Vocal training came through as she improvised along with Eckels beautiful arco work. Zingaro lyricist Roger Schore was present and gave heartfelt applause for Cole's rendition.

Here's what people are saying about Zingaro.

Time Out New York July 5, 2007: Crowned the champion of this year's Jazzmobile Competition for vocalists just a few weeks ago, Alexis Cole celebrates the release of a new CD Zingaro. The disc is named for a tune by Tom Jobim, but the title also references the itinerant life of a working musician.

An intimate session in which Cole's warm, weighty, and personable tones are supported by the spare accompaniment of guitarist Ron Affif and bassist Jeffry Eckels, Zingaro proves that Cole's new prize was no fluke.

Roger Schore, lyricist- Zingaro:

I'm really enjoying it and I'm very pleased with your recording of ZINGARO. You successfully sustain the bitter mood and tone of the lyric. Your intelligent phrasing as well as your interpretive skills make for a moving recording. Again, I thank you for recording it. I also congratulate you for writing MORNING WITH YOU which is delightful. It's a charming piece and I hope it gets picked up by other singers. It could not have been easy recording BODY AND SOUL with only a bass accompaniment, but you successfully climbed that mountain without losing your footing. I loved the arrangements and singing behind OVER THE RAINBOW and GOD BLESS THE CHILD as well as your swinging versions of SAVOY and SWEET LORRAINE. Altogether, the CD is a winner and I hope it earns frequent airplay, wonderful reviews and strong sales.

Bob Weir- contributor to Jazz Journal International:

Yep, the album arrived yesterday and I love it. Your singing combines maturity with youthful verve and energy - very appealing and distinctive. And such wonderful support from Ron and Jeff - superb musicianship throughout. On first hearing, Zingaro is the standout track - you really get into the song and make a very personal statement. I will listen to the CD a few more times before writing my review because I know there are more subtleties to be discovered. Congratulations on producing such high quality work - it really deserves to make a big impact.

Host Burton Segall of station KZYX:

The grouping of musicians and somewhat minimalist style of accompanying is beautiful and very revealing. A lot of singers, even some that are good enough, would not perform or record in such a setting. I like your choices of tunes and your voice. Fine improvising.
