Copenhagen Jazz Festival will kick off on Friday, July 6th, to fill all of Denmark’s capital with jazz music for 10 days. The newly reopened Jazzhouse located in the heart of the city, in Niels Hemmingsens Gade, will obviously also play a crucial part in the festival.

Here you will find a full programme of international acts under the theme ”21st Century Jazz”. “21st Century Jazz” invites you to experience the sound of the international jazz scene here and now while also exploring the roots and catching a glimpse of jazz to come and the crossroads between jazz, folk, world, electronic music, classic minimalism and more.

The festival theme will be opened by the American trumpet-prodigy Ambrose Akinmusire. Akinmusire is staking his claim as the next important voice on the jazz trumpet with “When the Heart Emerges Glistening", only his second album as a leader and his first for Blue Note Records. Co-produced by Akinmusire and his label mate and mentor Jason Moran, the album’s 12 songs (10 of which were composed by Akinmusire) feature the 29-year-old trumpeter’s young quintet, a close-knit group of longtime friends and frequent collaborators that breathes a remarkable collective identity.

Among the highlights one can look forward to two nights with Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas' quartet “Sound Prints". an all-star ensemble with a strong focus on Wayne Shorter’s enigmatic universe. From earlier collaborations Lovano and Douglas have shown that their distinct and styles can lead, blend and push the idiom forward both in composition and improvisation, while embracing the front-line masters of previous generations.

One of jazz' most spectacular new constellations in recent years is arguably the explosive meeting between soul diva Neneh Cherry and Swedish/Norwegian maverick freejazz group The Thing. Their new album (on Smalltown Supersound) “The Cherry Thing" has received rave reviews and has proved that the seemingly unlikely group is able to create pure and powerful magic with their takes on songs from artists such as Suicide, Ornette Coleman and MF Doom.

In 2011 Swedish trumpet player/composer Goran Kajfes won the Nordic Music Prize for his album “XY”. The jury stated: “It’s an ambitious and warm fusion of sonic elements, from jazz with both african and eastern influences to electronica. This double album really does something that is quite rare: it communicates the pure joy of music.” Kajfes is of Croatian heritage, grown up in Sweden in a family of musicians and artists. He is, since many years, an obvious authority at the very core in the Swedish music scene. At Jazzhouse he will be performing with his group Goran Kajfes Subtropic Arkestra with musicians from such diverse projects as Tape and Dungen.
