JAZZ.FM91 announced the first annual JAZZ.FM91 World Music Festival with 5 concerts running from Tuesday, August 6, 2013 to Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Hugh’s Room. The festival showcases jazz fusion from around the world featuring an eclectic mix of international and local jazz artists.

“In just a few years, JAZZ.FM91 has grown from being Canada’s premier jazz station to a global premier jazz station. With the ability to stream JAZZ.FM91 anywhere in the world, we now have a loyal global listenership. To honour this, we’re launching our first annual World Music Festival. Blending jazz with world beat is something we’ve wanted to do for years, and we’re excited to present this new concert series,” said Ross Porter, President and CEO of JAZZ.FM91.

The festival kicks off on Tuesday, August 6th with “Odessa Havana”. Award-winning trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder teams up with Juno Award winning pianist and composer Hilario Durán and a crew of Canada’s top jazz and world musicians to present this exciting Jewish- Cuban fusion. Working with award-winning producer (and band member) Roberto Occhipinti, the ensemble has captured the fresh, fiery and innovative sound that ignites audiences at every performance.

On Wednesday, August 7th we travel to Venezuela with Eric St. Laurent and Eliana Cuevas. This double-bill features a set by Eric St. Laurent Trio who perform instrumental music based on Central and South American rhythms. Eliana Cuevas, a native of Venezuela, will perform songs from her most recent CD with George Koller on bass, Mark Kelso on drums and her husband Jeremy Ledbetter on keys. Over to South Africa on Thursday, August 8th with Bruce Cassidy’s “Tribute to Hugh Masekela”. Bruce spent over ten years in South Africa becoming good friends with Masekela and has formed a nine-piece band to pay tribute to one of Africa’s most beloved musicians. On Friday, August 9th we’re in France with “From Paris With Love” featuring songs made famous by Edith Piaf, Joesphine Baker, Django Rheinhardt and more…as performed by Lyne Tremblay and Amy McConnell, with Drew Jureka on violin, Jesse Barksdale on guitar and more!

Closing the festival on Saturday, August 10th, we move to India with one of the world’s foremost modern jazz guitar players, Rez Abbasi with “Music for Snake Charming”.
