Jazz vocalist, Broadway actress and wife of Latin superstar Ruben Blades, Luba Mason is “a powerfully emotional song interpreter” (All Music Guide) who is blessed with “a celestial voice” (Los Angeles Times). A classically trained singer and pianist, Mason – who these days likes to be referred to as just “Luba” - will be teaming up with pianist/composer Vadim Neselovskyi, Grand Prize Winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition, for a show at Iridium on May 15th. The evening will present “MIXTURA” (a term Luba has created to explain the kind of music that she does) – which is a blend of different musical currents – Jazz, Pop, Classical and World Music. The evening will feature original compositions as well as standards— showcased amongst some newly arranged familiar tracks from her previous albums — to create a skillful, multifaceted and entertaining evening of music which is being recorded for a live CD to be released at a later date.

As a recording artist, Luba has released two critically–acclaimed albums: COLLAGE (PS Classics), a beautiful marriage of Latin, pop, jazz and poetry, and KRAZY LOVE, (Sunnyside Records), debuting her impressive song writing skills executing a “cool, Brazilian mood” with an intimate acoustic sound, featuring bassist Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets), Renato Neto (Prince), world renowned flautist Hubert Laws and 10 time Grammy Winner Ruben Blades. Having toured the US and abroad, Luba has been a featured performer at the PANAMA JAZZ FESTIVAL opening for Wayne Shorter, Danilo Perez and Chucho Valdez and has headlined HAVANA, CUBA’S 40th INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL as well as COSTA RICA’S INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL. In the U.S., she has performed sold out shows at LA’s famed CATALINA BAR & GRILL, YOSHI’S in Oakland, the BLUE NOTE in N.Y., BLUES ALLEY in D.C., WORLD CAFÉ in Philadelphia and the REGATTA BAR in Boston. She has also headlined at VIBRATO and the CINEGRILL in L.A., FEINSTEIN’S, BIRDLAND, B.B. KINGS, IRIDIUM and THE METROPOLITAN ROOM in N.Y.

A native New Yorker, Luba made her roots as a performer on the Broadway stage having starred in over 8 Broadway shows including CHICAGO (playing Velma Kelly opposite Brooke Shields as Roxy), JEKYLL & HYDE, Paul Simon’s THE CAPEMAN, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS (withMatthew Broderick), Trevor Nunn’s SUNSET BLVD. , the Tony award winning musical THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES directed by Tommy Tune, and co-starred opposite the legendary comedian Sid Caesar in SID CAESAR & CO.

Tapped by Ruben Blades (her cast mate in “THE CAPEMAN”) as a guest vocalist for his 2003 Grammy Award-winning CD MUNDO, Luba has also segued from the New York stage to the Hollywood scene, tackling dramatic roles in guest-starring parts on LAW & ORDER, NYPD BLUE, NEW YORK UNDERCOVER, and opposite Jeff Goldblum in the psychic detective series, RAINES.
