Jazz Trumpeter and Mentor Chuck Miller Dies

The Jazz World Says Farewell To Another Music Legend

Former UNO Adjunct Professor of Black Studies Charles (Chuck) Miller, widely respected for his musical talent and dedication to Omaha's “at risk" youth, passed away on Saturday, September 17, at a local hospital.

Chuck Miller was mentor to many of Omaha's finest musicians. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Omaha Black Music and Community Hall of Fame in July, for his many musical accomplishments and community work.

Music educator Charles (Chuck) Miller was an outstanding jazz trumpeter, music arranger, and songwriter. In 1975, he was the first African American ever to receive a Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Miller continued his musical education, earning Masters of Music Degrees from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) and Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Chuck Miller performed with The Esquires, The Fabulous Rhinestones, Loggins and Messina, The Dazz Band, Switch, New Edition, Grover Washington Jr., Kenny Burrell, and many other well known artists. Miller recently released a book sharing his musical journey, entitled A Bridge To Success (One Man's Vision Changed the Lives of Many) and also co-authored another book, African American Jazz and Rap Social and Philosophical Examinations of Black Expressive Behavior. The Omaha City Council, and Mayor Jim Suttle have officially proclaimed April 23rd to be called “Professor Charles L. Miller Day."

Viewing will be on Friday, September 23, from 5-8pm at Roeders Mortuary, 4932 Ames Ave. Omaha, NE 68104

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 24, 9am, at Freestone Primitive Baptist Church, 4023 Ames Avenue Omaha NE. 68111
