JANUARY 2010 SCHEDULE

1/7 1/10 KENNY BARRON QUINTET (at 7:30 & 9:30 only) Kenny Barron piano Kiyoshi Kitagawa bass Ben Riley drums Stefon Harris vibes Anne Drummond flute

The Los Angeles Times hailed Kenny Barron as one of the top jazz pianists in the world for his peerless blend of keyboard sensitivity, melodic mastery, and infectious rhythm. A professional musician since his teens, this ninetime Grammy Award nominee has gigged and/or recorded with a proverbial Whos Who of jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie (1962-1966), Freddie Hubbard (1966-1970), Yusef Lateef (1970-1975), and Ron Carter (1976-1980). As an educator, Kenny served on the music faculty of Rutgers University from 1973 to 2000; as an entrepreneur, he co-founded the thriving independent jazz label Joken Records. For this much-anticipated Jazz Standard engagement, the pianist will lead a diverse quintet of outsized talents ranging from former Monk drummer Ben Riley to vibraphonist and Blue Note recording artist Stefon Harris. Music Charge: $30

1/9 ANNE DRUMMOND QUINTET (at 11:30 only)
Anne Drummond flute
Dave Eggar cello
Klaus Mueller piano
Kiyoshi Kitagawa bass
Alvester Garnett drums When Down Beat named Anne Drummond as a rising star on flute, it was just one more sign of this gifted artists growing prominence on the American jazz scene. Annes Obliqsound CD Like Water (released 9/15/09) explores the sensual sounds and intoxicating rhythms of Brazil with the invaluable support of a virtuoso ensemble including pianists Klaus Mueller and Xavier Davis, bassist Nilson Matta (bass), drummer Duduka da Fonseca, and cellist Dave Eggar. Like Water is at once the culmination of the leaders professional apprenticeship and the first step in what seems certain to be a long and innovative careerwhich makes us proud and fortunate to present Anne Drummond in her debut appearance at Jazz Standard. Tickets: $25

1/11 MINGUS BIG BAND

Our Mingus Mondays residency continues in the New Year with two expansive sets by currently, the worlds most onform jazz big band, in the words of Alyn Shipton of The Times of London Online. The band is not all bombast and derring-do, but is also capable of the melancholy reflection that was also an integral part of Mingus musical world. Music Charge: $25

1/12-1/14 DAVID GILMORE & NUMEROLOGY featuring SPECIAL GUESTS
David Gilmore guitar
Claudia Acua vocals
Miguel Zenon alto saxophone
Christian McBride bass
Jeff “Tain" Watts drums
Mino Cinelu percussion

One of the most distinctive and in-demand guitarists in jazz today, David Gilmore has appeared on over 50 recordings (including Wayne Shorters Grammy Awardwinning High Life) and established himself as a major presence on the international touring scene through his stage work with Wayne Shorter, Dave Douglas, Don Byron, and David Sanborn, just to name a few. In 2001, the Jazz Journalists Association nominated Davids 2001 album Ritualism for Debut CD of the Year; more recently, he was voted into the Rising Stars category in Down Beats Critics Poll. As a composer, David Gilmores music reflects his diverse musical influences and experiences, a path that has led to the creation of Numerology Suite, an ambitious and multi-faceted new work featuring bassist Christian McBride, drummer Jeff Tain Watts, and vocalist Claudia Acua. David Gilmore's Numerology Suite was created with support from Chamber Music America's New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Music Charge: $25

1/15-1/17 GEORGE COLEMAN QUARTET
George Coleman tenor saxophone
Harold Mabern piano
Nat Reeves bass
George Coleman, Jr. - drums

George Coleman is a living legend of the tenor saxophone whose 57year career has led him from B.B. King to Max Roach to Miles Davis. Beginning in 1963, George recorded with Miles on four classic albums Seven Steps to Heaven, My Funny Valentine, Four and Miles Davis in Europe alongside Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. George has led his own bands since 1973, working in quartet, quintet and octet settings, and appearing as a prized guest soloist with such notable pianists as Ahmad Jamal, Richie Beirach and the late Tete Montoliu. He has released more than a dozen discs as a leader on such labels as Verve, Muse, Timeless, and Evidence including At Yoshis (1987) and My Horns of Plenty (1992). Coleman is a marvel; there isn't a sax player who knows his instrument better, or one who imparts so much knowledge in every marathon solo. (The New Yorker) Music Charge: $30

1/18 MINGUS ORCHESTRA

Whenever you feel gloomy about the future of jazz, try to catch the mavericks gathered by Charles Mingus indefatigable widow, Sue. Many repertory bands can deliver noteperfect but lifeless reproductions of old glories. Mingus heirs stay as true to the restless spirit of the originals as anyone could possibly hope for. (Clive Davis, The Times of London Online) Music Charge: $25

1/19-1/20 STRYKER/SLAGLE BAND
Dave Stryker guitar
Steve Slagle saxophones
Jay Anderson bass
Victor Lewis drums

For more than two decades, guitarist Dave Stryker and saxophonist Steve Slagle have shaped and refined their dynamic group concept. In his Down Beat review, Will Smith hailed their 2005 album Live at Jazz Standard for having achieved an empathy that results in several passages of remarkable collective improvisation on such striking originals as Doubleblue and a gorgeous reading of George Gershwins I Loves You Porgy. Dont miss this return engagement to our stage by one of todays most inspired twoman teams! (JazzTimes) Music Charge: $25

1/21-1/24 FLY
Mark Turner tenor saxophone
Larry Grenadier bass
Jeff Ballard drums

Jazz Standard is proud to welcome back FLY, that leaderless collective of Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier, and Jeff Ballard currently playing at the highest level of creative improvisation and composition. Sometimes its the saxophone carrying the melody, other times its the bass or drums, says Turner. We spread out the frontline duties among us. Since the 2008 release of their second ECM album Sky & Country, Fly has emerged as one of the most compellingly cohesive small groups in jazz, with a sparse but supple chemistry admired by other musicians. (Nate Chinen, The New York Times) Music Charge: $25 / $30 Friday & Saturday

1/25 MINGUS BIG BAND

The Mingus Big Band is one of the most encouraging dimensions of a sustainable jazz tradition: it embodies the Mingus concept of the Jazz Workshop, an environment for learning and extension in the context of the musical standards defined by the players, composers and arrangers, and in this case, by the great spirit that anchors the band. Iconoclasm and affectionate reverence for the traditions of jazz vie throughout; the ultimate winner, of course, is the jazz tradition, changed but enriched. (Bill Bennett, JazzTimes) Music Charge: $25

1/26 SOMI
Somi - voice
Liberty Ellman - guitar
Toru Dodo - piano
Michael Olatuja - bass
Steve Belvilus drums

From her roots in East Africa, the wonderful singer known as Somi found a new home in West Harlem and a warm welcome from New Yorks creative community. In 2007, Somis Harmonia Mundi CD Red Soil In My Eyes made the Top 10 of the world music charts while she performed to audiences across four continents. In October 2009, Somi released her third album, If The Rains Come First (Obliqsound), which includes the track Enganjyani featuring special guest Hugh Masekela. Dont miss this special one-night stand with Somi, the earthy gutsiness of Nina Simone blended with the vocal beauty of Dianne Reeves. (JazzTimes) Music Charge: $20

1/27 THE FREEDOM BAND featuring VICTOR LEWIS
Noah Preminger tenor saxophone
Dan Tepfer piano
Joe Martin bass
Victor Lewis drums

Four outstanding players make for a special band, and a most auspicious one-night stand. Noah Preminger is a tenor sax giant who finds new chord changes that sound harmonious and urgent at the same time. (Chuck Graham, Tucson AZ Citizen) Dan Tepfer, winner of the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, just released a beautiful album of duets with the veteran altoist Lee Konitz. Bassist Joe Martin led his own all-star band on our stage in October, which featured saxophonist Mark Turner and pianist Brad Mehldau. Leader Victor Lewis, an in-demand percussionist since his teen years in Omaha, has amassed a book-length rsum that includes stints with Woody Shaw, David Sanborn, Stan Getz (who recorded Victors composition I Wanted To Say), Grover Washington Jr., and Kenny Barron. Music Charge: $20

1/28-1/31 JEREMY PELT QUINTET
Jeremy Pelt trumpet
JD Allen tenor saxophone
Danny Grissett piano
Dwayne Burno bass
Gerald Cleaver drums

In his Down Beat review of Jeremy Pelts 2008 CD November, John Murph welcomed a scintillating new disc that proves that acoustic instrumentation can be as electrifying as any funk/fusion experiment. The fireworks ignite from Pelts trumpet improvisations, which at times crackle with the intensity of classic Freddie Hubbard. His deft compositions make November a rewarding disc that invites repeated listens. Jazz Standard and HighNote Records celebrate the release of Jeremys HighNote label debut, Men of Honor. The scenemaking jazz trumpeter to watch! (Time Out New York) Music Charge: $25 / $30 Friday & Saturday
